U-Carmen eKhayelitsha is a feature film based on Bizet's nineteenth century set in modern day Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Girl (Carmen) seduces boy (Jongikhaya), boy becomes completely obsessed, girl leaves boy for another (Lulamile), boy in a jealous rage kills her. What drives Carmen to destruction? U-Carmen Khayelitsha is a feature film sung and spoken in Xhosa, one of South Africa's eleven official languages.

Awards: U-Carmen eKhayelitsha was the winner of the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival and was in official selection at the Cannes Film Festival Tous les Cinemas du Monde, Toronto Film Festival, London Film Festival, Ebert Film Festival, Dublin Film Festival, Pusan Film Festival.

Distribution: Fortissimo Films has acquired worldwide distribution rights outside of Africa.

Ster Kinekor released the film in South Africa in 2005.
